Deborah Jennings, “Mask”

We must reconsider what labels mean and to whom we attach them. We must not view disability as a weakness that has to be hidden to make able persons feel strong and normal. We must remove the masks that we impose upon the disabled and eliminate the labels that cause the disabled to feel ashamed and hide what we deem as imperfections or weaknesses. Once we remove the masks the real conversation of equality among all people can truly begin.

  1. You hit the nail on the head; as a disabled person, I admitt to donning the mask of strength and super courage. The little boy in me yearns for help, not because I am weak, but because I am human.
